Experience the magic of Chicago as it opens at HM Theatre with stellar performances.
Topics covered
In the midst of winter’s chill, with snow and ice sweeping across the north-east corner of Scotland, the vibrant energy of the Chicago musical has arrived to warm hearts and entertain audiences. Opening last night at the HM Theatre, this classic award-winning production not only stays true to its roots but also offers a fresh and exhilarating experience for both seasoned theatre-goers and newcomers alike.
Outstanding performances steal the spotlight
2024 has already proven to be a remarkable year for the APA’s programming, and the arrival of Chicago has set a high standard for the touring productions that will follow. Having attended the show multiple times, including performances in the West End and on Broadway, I approached this latest rendition with a discerning eye.
However, I was thoroughly impressed by the caliber of talent on display.
One of the standout performances came from Kevin Clifton, known for his appearances on Strictly Come Dancing. Taking on the iconic role of Billy Flynn, Clifton brought an unexpected depth to the character, showcasing not only his impressive dance skills but also his ability to command the stage with charisma and charm. His performance was nothing short of spectacular, earning him a well-deserved 10/10 from this critic.
Leading ladies shine in their roles
The leading ladies of the production, Faye Brookes as Roxie Hart and Djalenga Scott as Velma Kelly, also delivered exceptional performances. Both actresses brought their unique interpretations to the roles, steering clear of simply mimicking the portrayals of Rene Zellweger and Catherine Zeta-Jones from the film adaptation. Their ability to infuse the characters with fresh energy and authenticity was a highlight of the evening.
Additionally, Brenda Edwards received enthusiastic applause for her portrayal of Mama Morton. While her vocal performance was impressive, a minor critique would be her limited movement on stage. Nonetheless, her presence added a significant layer to the production.
The live band elevates the experience
A special mention must be made of the live band, whose impeccable delivery of the musical’s score added to the overall experience. Positioned prominently on stage, the musicians received the recognition they deserve, enhancing the vibrant atmosphere of the show. Their performance was a testament to the importance of live music in theatre, creating a dynamic and engaging experience for the audience.
Chicago will be running at HM Theatre until Saturday, and I highly recommend that everyone seize the opportunity to witness this dazzling production. Tickets are available now, and for those interested, there’s also an opportunity to read an interview with a local cast member, providing further insight into the magic behind the scenes.
