In a strategic move to bolster their defensive lineup, Ross County has announced the loan signings of two promising players, Zac Ashworth and Jonathan Tomkinson, ahead of their Scottish Cup match against Livingston. This double acquisition reflects the club’s commitment to strengthening their squad as they navigate the challenges of the season.
New arrivals to enhance defensive options
The Staggies have secured the services of Wales under-21 international Zac Ashworth from Blackpool on a temporary basis until the end of the current season. Ashworth, a left-back, joined Blackpool at the start of the season after developing his skills in the youth academy of West Bromwich Albion.
Despite his potential, he has only made six appearances in League One for the Seasiders, prompting County manager Don Cowie to bring him to Dingwall to gain more playing time.
Cowie expressed his satisfaction with the signing, stating, “We are really pleased to add Zac to the group. He comes with a good amount of games played in English football as well as with the Welsh national team at youth level. He is a versatile player who has experience playing as a full-back as well as at centre back.” This versatility is expected to provide the team with additional tactical flexibility.
American talent joins the ranks
Alongside Ashworth, Ross County has also welcomed American defender Jonathan Tomkinson on loan from Norwich City. At 22 years old and standing at 6ft 4in, Tomkinson brings a significant physical presence to the backline. He has been with Norwich since 2019 and has made three first-team appearances, complemented by loan spells at Stevenage and Bradford City, where he gained valuable experience.
Cowie highlighted Tomkinson’s pedigree, noting, “Jonathan helps us to add competition to our defensive area. He comes with good pedigree having played regularly for Bradford City last season during his loan spells. He is a real presence at the back as well as being mobile too.” This addition is expected to enhance the team’s defensive capabilities, particularly in set-piece situations.
January transfer window activity
The arrival of Ashworth and Tomkinson marks the fourth signing for Ross County during the January transfer window. Earlier, the club had also secured Hibernian midfielder Nohan Kenneh and Huddersfield Town forward Kieran Phillips. These strategic signings indicate a proactive approach by the management to ensure the team is well-equipped for the remainder of the season.
As the Staggies prepare for their upcoming Scottish Cup clash, the integration of these new players will be crucial. With a focus on enhancing their defensive options, Ross County aims to build momentum and improve their performance on the pitch. The fans will be eager to see how these new signings impact the team’s dynamics and overall success in the cup competition.
