Tributes pour in for Alasdair Craigie, co-founder of CHAP Group
Alasdair Craigie, the esteemed co-founder of the Aberdeen-based construction firm CHAP Group, has passed away at the age of 81. His death has prompted an outpouring of tributes from colleagues, friends, and family, who remember him as a humble and hardworking individual, often referred to as a true gentleman.

A remarkable journey in construction

Under Alasdair’s visionary leadership, CHAP Group expanded its operations significantly, establishing a strong presence in various sectors including construction, civil engineering, commercial property, house building, and quarrying. Originally hailing from Orkney, Alasdair’s strong work ethic was cultivated during his formative years on the family farm, which laid the groundwork for his future success in civil engineering after graduating from the University of Aberdeen.

His professional journey began with major firms such as Wimpy and William Tawse, where he contributed to numerous construction projects across Scotland and southern England. However, it was in 1976 that Alasdair took a bold step into entrepreneurship by co-founding CHAP Group alongside three colleagues. The name CHAP is an acronym derived from the initials of its founding partners: Craigie, Harper, Anderson, and Phillip. Alasdair’s relentless drive and commitment were pivotal in steering the firm towards growth and success.

Leadership and legacy

Despite being the youngest of the founding directors, Alasdair’s work ethic and determination led him to serve as the sole managing director for many years. His leadership saw CHAP evolve into one of Scotland’s most respected construction and civil engineering companies. The firm undertook a variety of high-profile projects, including lighthouse renovations on remote islands and infrastructure developments for telecommunications giant BT, solidifying its reputation as a go-to contractor for complex and challenging projects.

Even during economic downturns and the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, Alasdair remained steadfast in his commitment to the company’s success. His son, Hugh Craigie, who now serves as the managing director of CHAP, reflected on his father’s quiet yet determined approach to leadership, noting that many sought his advice and valued his discretion.

A life beyond business

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Alasdair was actively involved in community service. He served as a past president of the Aberdeen Rotary Club and the Aberdeen Association of Civil Engineers. His contributions extended to the board of governors for Robert Gordon University during a significant period of campus expansion, and he played a role in the committee that facilitated the construction of a new curling rink on the Lang Stracht.

Alasdair Craigie is survived by his wife Edna, his children Hugh, Anne, and Ian, and four grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at Aberdeen Crematorium (West Chapel) on Wednesday, January 29, at PM, where friends and family are invited to pay their respects.
