The Victorian Market in Inverness has become a vibrant hub for shoppers and diners, achieving remarkable visitor numbers during the typically quieter winter months. Recent statistics reveal that in December 2023, the market welcomed a staggering 154,946 visitors, marking a significant increase of 5.6% compared to the previous month.

This trend continued into January 2024, with 81,200 people visiting in the first three weeks alone, up from 74,300 during the same period last year.

Winter visitor numbers surpass pre-renovation averages

While these figures are lower than the peak tourism months, when weekly visitor counts soared to between 62,000 and 68,000, they still represent a substantial improvement over the pre-renovation average of 6,500 customers per week.

The market’s recent success can be attributed to the strong support from local residents, who have embraced the revitalized space.

Local support crucial for market’s success

Cameron MacFarlane, the manager of the Victorian Market, emphasized the importance of local patronage during the winter months. He stated, “It’s fantastic. It shows that if you provide good quality services, people will come here. It underlines that the market is a real destination for local people and a focal point in the city.” This sentiment reflects the market’s role as a community hub, especially when tourist numbers dwindle.

Transformation and community engagement

The Victorian Market underwent a significant redesign in January 2021, aimed at accommodating new food and drink businesses. The reopening in September 2022 was somewhat subdued due to the national mourning period following the Queen’s death, but the market has since transformed into a bustling center of activity. With a seating capacity of 202, the market regularly exceeds this number, particularly during weekends when free music sessions and special events attract even more visitors.

As the market continues to thrive, it stands as a testament to the power of community support and quality service. For those interested in more updates about Inverness and its vibrant local scene, visiting dedicated news pages and joining local social media groups can provide valuable insights.
