As the winter nights envelop the Granite City, Aberdeen comes alive with the vibrant colors and enchanting designs of the Spectra festival. This annual event, known as Scotland’s Festival of Light, is now in its 11th year and has become a beloved tradition for both locals and visitors alike.

Running until 10 PM on Sunday, the festival promises to illuminate the city with a series of breathtaking light installations that captivate the imagination.

Mesmerizing displays across the city

On the opening night, thousands gathered to witness the spectacular displays that adorned various locations throughout Aberdeen.

One of the standout installations, “Winds of Change”, located at Union Terrace Gardens, drew crowds with its dynamic movement and vibrant colors. Meanwhile, the “Northern Lights Programme” at Rosemount Viaduct offered a stunning visual experience, reminiscent of the natural phenomenon that inspires its name. Another highlight was St Nicholas Kirk’s “Voyage”, which transported viewers into a world of light and sound, creating an immersive experience that left many in awe.

A community celebration

The festival not only showcases artistic talent but also fosters a sense of community. Families, friends, and tourists alike come together to enjoy the festive atmosphere, making it a perfect outing for all ages. The event kicks off each evening at PM, allowing ample time for attendees to explore the various installations and enjoy the accompanying entertainment. Local vendors also set up stalls, offering delicious food and warm drinks to keep everyone cozy during their visit.

Capturing the magic

Our photographer, Kath Flannery, was on hand to capture the magic of the festival’s opening night. Her stunning images reflect the joy and wonder experienced by attendees as they wandered through the illuminated streets. The festival not only highlights the artistic capabilities of light installations but also serves as a reminder of the warmth and connection that community events can bring during the colder months.

As the festival continues through the weekend, it invites everyone to experience the transformative power of light. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, the Spectra festival is an event not to be missed, offering a unique opportunity to see Aberdeen in a whole new light.
