In recent weeks, Aberdeen has witnessed a troubling surge in deliberate fires, raising significant safety concerns among local authorities and residents alike. Firefighters have responded to multiple incidents, with four wilful fire-raisings reported within just five days.
This alarming trend has prompted city councillors to issue urgent warnings, emphasizing the potential dangers these fires pose to the community.
One of the most notable incidents involved the closure of Dyce Academy, which disrupted the education of hundreds of students.
The fire, deemed deliberate, occurred shortly after another blaze at a derelict building in Tillydrone. Such incidents not only threaten property but also endanger lives, as highlighted by local officials.

Barney Crockett, a Dyce councillor and former firefighter, expressed grave concerns about the implications of these fires. He stated, “The first thought you have is, of course, about safety, especially at something like a school. Smoke kills.” His remarks underscore the critical need for awareness regarding the dangers associated with even small fires, which can escalate quickly and lead to tragic outcomes.
Crockett further emphasized that the increasing frequency of these incidents stretches emergency services thin, potentially diverting them from more serious emergencies. “People could die as a result of this,” he warned, highlighting the broader implications of wilful fire-raising on community safety.

In light of these incidents, local leaders are calling for increased community vigilance. Martin Greig, convener of the council’s education committee, described the recent fire-raising incidents as “nasty and vindictive,” urging the public to remain alert to suspicious behaviour. He noted that while these acts are perpetrated by a minority, their impact is felt throughout the community.
Chief Inspector Steven McDonald of the North Aberdeenshire Area Command reiterated the police’s commitment to addressing this issue. He stated, “Anti-social behaviour such as wilful fire-raisings causes misery for local residents and will not be tolerated.” The police are actively working to identify those responsible and are collaborating with various agencies to implement preventative measures.
