Banchory-based firm aims to create jobs and reduce imports with new technology.

Topics covered
Investment to drive growth
Banchory-based Subsea Micropiles has announced plans to expand its team and operations following a significant £9.2 million investment. This funding, primarily sourced from the Scottish National Investment Bank and Marubeni Itochu Steel Inc., is set to enhance the company’s capabilities in providing marine anchor systems for offshore projects.
The investment is expected to facilitate the creation of approximately 100 jobs over the next five years, as the firm aims to develop its innovative technology further.
Reducing reliance on imports
Founded in 2017 by former US Navy officer Derek Robertson, Subsea Micropiles is focused on addressing the growing demand for offshore wind energy solutions.
The company’s strategy includes manufacturing anchors locally in Scotland, which will significantly reduce the need for imported components. This move not only supports local job creation but also aligns with the broader goal of enhancing the sustainability of offshore construction projects.
Innovative technology for a sustainable future
The marine anchor systems developed by Subsea Micropiles are designed to be less carbon-intensive and environmentally disruptive compared to traditional methods. By utilizing smaller vessels and remote seabed drilling systems, the technology minimizes noise and vibration, thereby reducing disturbances to marine ecosystems. This innovative approach positions the company as a key player in the floating offshore wind industry, which is crucial for meeting Scotland’s renewable energy targets.
Support from investment partners
Laura Fidao, director at the Scottish National Investment Bank, emphasized the importance of easing supply chain bottlenecks in the renewable energy sector. She noted that Subsea Micropiles’ technology is aligned with the bank’s mission to support net-zero initiatives and innovation. Similarly, Makoto Ishitani, president and CEO of Marubeni – Itochu Steel Inc., expressed pride in investing in a company that embodies a pioneering spirit in offshore foundation technology.
Looking ahead
As Subsea Micropiles prepares to establish a new manufacturing facility, details regarding its location remain undisclosed. However, the firm is already expanding its workforce, with plans to onboard additional staff in the coming weeks. With a focus on innovation and sustainability, Subsea Micropiles is poised to play a vital role in Scotland’s offshore wind market, contributing to the country’s reputation as a leader in renewable energy.
