Running for remembrance: A grandfather’s marathon journey
In a heartfelt tribute to his late grandson, 73-year-old Phill Thompson from Buckie is taking on marathons to keep the memory of Harris alive. Harris, who tragically passed away just seven days after birth in 2016, has inspired a movement that not only honors his memory but also supports other bereaved families.

The inception of Harris’s Heroes

Phill, alongside Harris’s parents Rhiannon and Kev McDonald, founded Harris’s Heroes as a way to commemorate their beloved child. Initially, family members donned t-shirts featuring Harris’s picture at various events.

However, the initiative soon evolved, allowing bereaved parents to add their own children’s names to Phill’s marathon vest. This poignant gesture enables Phill to ‘run each mile with one of the babies,’ ensuring their memories are cherished during his races.

Marathon milestones and emotional journeys

The first significant event for Harris’s Heroes was the London Marathon in 2023, where Phill raised funds for Aberdeen Sands, a charity dedicated to supporting bereaved parents. As he prepares for the upcoming Moray Marathon, Phill reflects on the emotional journey he undertakes with each race. “When I run, I feel like I’m accompanied by all the children whose names I carry,” he shares. This connection provides him with strength during the physically demanding marathon, reminding him of the love and memories that fuel his determination.

Creating a legacy of support

Phill’s commitment to honoring Harris extends beyond personal remembrance; it also aims to raise awareness about the challenges faced by bereaved families. Sands, the charity Phill supports, was established in 1978 by parents who experienced the devastating loss of their babies. Since then, it has played a crucial role in advocating for the recognition of baby loss and providing support to countless families across the UK.

As he prepares for the Moray Marathon, Phill has already received numerous requests for names to be included on his vest. “It’s a way for me to carry their stories with me,” he explains. Additionally, he has a unique tradition of wearing odd socks while running, a nod to his grandson’s connection to Down’s Syndrome. “Every time I put them on, it reminds me that I’m embarking on an adventure with Harris,” he adds.

Through his marathons, Phill Thompson not only keeps the memory of his grandson alive but also fosters a sense of community among those who have faced similar heartaches. His journey is a testament to the enduring power of love and remembrance, inspiring others to honor their lost loved ones in meaningful ways.
