In a remarkable event, eight pupils from Kemnay Primary School had the extraordinary opportunity to meet members of the Royal Family during a trip to London for Commonwealth Day. This once-in-a-lifetime experience took place on March 10, when the students were selected through a UK Government ballot to attend a prestigious ceremony at Westminster Abbey.
A whirlwind tour of London
Accompanied by Headmaster David Williams and Pupil Council Chair Diane McIntosh-Graham, the students embarked on a whirlwind tour of London, filled with excitement and anticipation. Their day began with a visit to iconic landmarks, including Piccadilly Circus and Downing Street, where they captured memorable photos.
The highlight of their trip was undoubtedly the annual Commonwealth Service held at Westminster Abbey, where they found themselves in the same room as His Majesty King Charles, Queen Camilla, Prince William, and Princess Kate.
Meeting the Royal Family
Among the students, Amelia Reynolds had the special honor of being a posy bearer, presenting flowers to Princess Anne during the ceremony. This moment was not only significant for Amelia but also for her fellow students, who were thrilled to witness the Royal Family in person. After the ceremony, The Princess Royal engaged in a brief yet meaningful conversation with Amelia, while Princess Kate also took the time to chat with the young attendees.
Reflections on a memorable experience
After the eventful day, the pupils shared their thoughts on the experience. Marriane Hill expressed her enjoyment of the landmarks, particularly Trafalgar Square, stating, “I would recommend this trip to anyone, and I will remember this for the rest of my life!” Oliver Campbell echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the significance of Commonwealth Day and the cultural displays from various countries. Emily McIntosh-Graham admitted to feeling nervous upon arriving at Westminster Abbey but was overjoyed to be part of such a historic occasion.
Headmaster David Williams emphasized the educational value of the trip, noting that it provided a unique opportunity for the students to witness the monarchy in action. He remarked, “It’s also a really good opportunity for them to form their own opinion at an early age, to see how the monarchy functions.” The experience not only enriched the students’ understanding of democracy but also sparked discussions among their peers back home.
This memorable journey to London for Commonwealth Day will undoubtedly leave a lasting impression on the pupils of Kemnay Primary School, as they carry the memories of their royal encounter and the cultural richness of the Commonwealth with them for years to come.
