The new LED system is equipped with 70 preset programs, allowing it to illuminate in various colors to commemorate local and national events, such as Remembrance Day. As the work progresses, contractors from McDonald & Munro have been seen scaling the monument with ropes and harnesses, ensuring the installation is carried out safely and effectively. Miguel Gomez, a director at McDonald & Munro, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “We have here working all week on the monument. It will be good to see the iconic landmark lit up again.” This marks the fourth time the team has worked on the monument, showcasing their commitment to preserving and enhancing this cherished site.

The Duke of Gordon monument was erected in 1839 in honor of George Gordon, the fifth Duke of Gordon, who was a notable figure in Scottish history. Born in Edinburgh, he was a professional soldier who rose to the rank of general and was instrumental in establishing the Gordon Chapel in Fochabers. After his death in 1836, he was laid to rest at Elgin Cathedral, and the monument serves as a lasting tribute to his legacy. By revitalizing the monument’s lighting, the community not only pays homage to its historical significance but also ensures that it remains a vibrant part of Elgin’s landscape.
