Authorities launch manhunt for rapist who vanished post-trial.

A significant manhunt is currently underway in Scotland for Omed Hassan, a convicted rapist who failed to appear in court for the final day of his trial. The 26-year-old, who resides on Scott Street in Perth, was expected to attend the High Court in Edinburgh on Thursday, where jurors were set to deliberate their verdict regarding serious charges against him.

Details of the case

Hassan was accused of assaulting a female student while she was asleep and unable to consent at a location in Fife on February 3, 2023. Despite his absence from the courtroom, the trial judge ruled that the proceedings should continue in the interest of justice.

The jury ultimately returned a guilty verdict, resulting in Hassan being placed on the sex offenders’ register.

Police response and public appeal

Following his disappearance, a warrant for Hassan’s arrest has been issued. He had been on bail since February 2024, and police are now working tirelessly to locate him. Within 24 hours of his vanishing, authorities launched a missing person appeal, urging the public to assist in the search. Hassan is known to frequent areas including Aberdeen, Perth, and Fife.

Physical description and safety warnings

Police have released a photograph of Hassan along with a detailed description to aid in the search efforts. He is described as approximately 6 feet tall with short black hair. Authorities are cautioning the public not to approach him if spotted, emphasizing the importance of contacting law enforcement instead. Inspector Robb has made a public appeal, urging Hassan to reach out to the police voluntarily.

“Extensive inquiries and searches are ongoing throughout the areas Omed is known to frequent,” Inspector Robb stated. “If anyone has seen him since Thursday, March 13, or has any information regarding his whereabouts, please contact us.” The police can be reached through 101, referencing incident number 0943 of March 13.
