Exploring significant infrastructure projects and holiday home developments in the region

Topics covered
Major infrastructure upgrades at Corran Ferry
The Highland Council is set to enhance the Corran Ferry service with a comprehensive infrastructure improvement scheme. This initiative aims to construct new facilities at the Corran Narrows, which will significantly benefit both residents and visitors.
The proposed works include the establishment of two slipways, an overnight berthing area, and a breakwater, alongside essential amenities such as parking, bicycle shelters, and a toilet block. Additionally, the plan incorporates electric vehicle (EV) charging stations and a purser’s kiosk, ensuring modern conveniences are available for users.
Furthermore, the project will address critical services like power, lighting, and drainage, enhancing the overall functionality of the ferry service. The application for this ambitious project is expected to be determined by July 10, marking a pivotal moment for transportation in the region.
New holiday homes at Kintail Village Hall site
In a move to boost local tourism, an application has been submitted for five holiday letting units at the former Kintail Village Hall site in Glenshiel. This area, renowned for its scenic beauty, will soon feature a mix of accommodation options, including a three-bedroom unit and a one-bedroom unit housed in a one-and-a-half-storey building. Additionally, three one-bedroom units will be constructed in a courtyard setting, providing a cozy atmosphere for guests.
The development aims to maintain the site’s natural charm while ensuring that the parking layout and access remain flexible for future expansions. With the application due for determination by May 9, this project promises to enhance the appeal of Glenshiel as a holiday destination.
Atlantis Leisure expansion and communication improvements
Atlantis Leisure has proposed a two-storey extension to its facility in Oban, which will accommodate a larger gym and office space. This expansion is designed to increase capacity, allowing more local residents to access gym facilities. The extension will be constructed using timber sourced from certified sustainable sources, reflecting a commitment to environmentally friendly practices.
In addition to leisure improvements, a new communications mast is planned for Loch Etive. This 82ft-high structure aims to enhance mobile reception in rural areas, addressing the persistent issue of “not spots.” The installation will include antennas, transmission dishes, and necessary equipment, with the application set for determination by April 8.
These developments highlight a proactive approach to improving infrastructure and services in Oban and Fort William, ensuring that the region continues to thrive and attract visitors.
