Concerns over North Coast 500: A local perspective on tourism challenges
The North Coast 500 (NC500), a scenic route launched a decade ago, has become a double-edged sword for local residents. While it has undoubtedly attracted tourists to the stunning landscapes of northern Scotland, it has also led to significant challenges for those living along the route.

Margaret Meek, a resident of Kinlochbervie, has been vocal about the negative impacts of this surge in tourism, describing it as a ‘monster’ that needs to be ‘wound down.’

Local voices against unsustainable tourism

Meek, who founded the Facebook group NC500 The Land Weeps in 2020, aims to provide a platform for locals to share their experiences and frustrations regarding the influx of visitors.

She argues that the NC500 has led to ‘unsustainable’ tourism, a sentiment echoed by other residents who feel their community is being overwhelmed. The marketing firm behind the NC500, however, disputes these claims, insisting that the benefits of tourism outweigh the drawbacks.

The impact on community and infrastructure

Residents like Meek and her friend Susan Black highlight the strain on local infrastructure, particularly concerning public facilities. They report an increase in littering, public toileting, and a general lack of respect from some tourists. Black noted that it is not uncommon to encounter human waste in lay-bys, a situation that has left many locals feeling frustrated and disrespected. The duo emphasizes that before the NC500’s inception, tourism was more sustainable, with visitors who respected the community and its resources.

Efforts to address the challenges

In response to these concerns, North Coast 500 Ltd has acknowledged the issues and is working on solutions, including improving infrastructure and education for visitors. David Richardson, the company’s development and engagement manager, stated that they are committed to listening to local feedback and making necessary changes. He emphasized the importance of responsible tourism and the need for better facilities to accommodate the growing number of visitors.

Moreover, the introduction of a visitor pledge aims to encourage tourists to respect the environment and support local communities. However, residents remain skeptical, arguing that more immediate action is needed to address the problems they face daily.

The motorhome dilemma

Another significant concern raised by locals is the rise of motorhome tourism. Many motorhome owners choose to park overnight in lay-bys rather than utilizing established campsites, leading to increased congestion and damage to local roads. Black pointed out that inexperienced drivers often struggle with navigating narrow roads, exacerbating the situation. The residents argue that this trend not only affects their quality of life but also poses safety risks on the roads.

As the debate continues, it is clear that the North Coast 500 has sparked a critical conversation about the balance between tourism and community well-being. While the route has brought economic benefits, the voices of local residents must be heard to ensure that tourism remains sustainable and respectful of the communities it impacts.
