Planning developments in the Hebrides: New projects and expansions
The Hebrides, a stunning archipelago off the west coast of Scotland, is witnessing a surge in planning applications and developments that promise to enhance the region’s appeal. From holiday cabins on the Isle of Iona to significant expansions at renowned restaurants, these projects aim to boost local tourism and provide essential services to the community.

New holiday cabins on the Isle of Iona

One of the most exciting proposals is for four holiday cabins at Machair House on the Isle of Iona. Nestled in a discreet corner of an existing croft, these cabins will be strategically located near the picturesque Bay at the Back of the Ocean and the island’s golf course.

The planning application, validated on March 19, is set to be determined by May 18. The developers plan to utilize and extend the existing access road to facilitate the installation and servicing of the cabins, ensuring minimal disruption to the natural landscape.

Expansion of Three Chimneys Restaurant in Skye

Another noteworthy development is the proposed expansion of the acclaimed Three Chimneys Restaurant in Dunvegan, Skye. Known for its exceptional cuisine featuring locally sourced ingredients, the restaurant aims to enhance its facilities by adding eight holiday units and a storage shed. The expansion will also improve parking for both staff and guests, introduce bike storage, and establish a bike hire service. The restaurant’s space will nearly double, accommodating more guests and increasing the number of hotel bedrooms from six to 14. This ambitious project, lodged with Highland Council, is expected to be decided by May 9.

Young Carers House in Portree

In a significant move to support the community, plans have been submitted for a Young Carers House in Portree. This initiative, proposed by Skye and Lochalsh Young Carers, aims to provide a daycare facility for school-age children who bear the responsibility of caring for family members. The facility will offer after-school activities, basic skills training, and a safe space for social interaction. Located on Hedgefield Road, the site boasts excellent pedestrian links to local schools and the town center, making it an ideal location for the proposed services. The application is due for determination by May 10.

Additional planning approvals across the Hebrides

In addition to these major projects, several other planning applications have been approved across the Hebrides. A cabin for holiday letting at Dunvegan has received the green light, while new signage for the Portree Co-op has been permitted. Furthermore, a house on the Isle of Oronsay and a house and garage at Cnoc Mor on the Isle of Eigg have also been approved. On the Isle of Mull, yurts near Pennyghael have been sanctioned, and Tiree has seen approvals for a new house replacing a demolished barn.

These developments reflect a growing commitment to enhancing the infrastructure and services available in the Hebrides, catering to both residents and visitors alike. As these projects progress, they promise to contribute significantly to the local economy and community well-being.
