Aberdeen beach's £50 million redevelopment aims to enhance tourism and family enjoyment.

Topics covered
City planners have confirmed that the ambitious £50 million redevelopment of Aberdeen beach is progressing as scheduled, with completion expected by next summer. This extensive project aims to create a vibrant seafront destination that caters to families and visitors alike.
Innovative features of the redevelopment
The transformation includes the construction of a futuristic playpark featuring a seven-storey “rope factory,” a new amphitheatre, and an expansive events field. These elements are designed to enhance the recreational offerings at the beach, making it a prime location for community events and family outings.
In addition to the playpark, the first phase of the project encompasses the erection of a striking gateway building and a canopy shelter, which will provide shade and comfort for visitors. The Broadhill area is also set for significant upgrades, including new viewing platforms and additional benches, creating a more inviting atmosphere for beachgoers.
Active travel routes and infrastructure improvements
Recently, council finance officer Alex McLellan announced that leftover funds will be allocated to enhance the stretch between Links Road and the Esplanade, transforming it into an active travel route. This section of Beach Boulevard, which has been closed since last summer, will be reduced from four lanes to two, incorporating dedicated cycle lanes and wider pavements to promote safer travel options.
These infrastructure improvements are part of a broader vision to position the waterfront as a key destination for both locals and tourists, ultimately boosting the city’s economy through increased foot traffic and tourism.
Progress and future developments
During a recent meeting, planning officials provided updates on the ongoing construction efforts, which are taking place across three key sites: the beach park, the events field, and Broadhill. Chief capital officer John Wilson reported that work has commenced on laying the foundations for the canopy and gateway building, with materials for the “rope factory” already being procured.
Drone footage has revealed that the foundations for the canopies and the new amphitheatre are now in place, while a new car park designated for blue badge holders has been carved out next to the ballroom. Broadhill has also seen improvements, including polished steps and ongoing landscaping efforts.
As the project progresses, visitors to Aberdeen beach can expect to witness significant enhancements taking shape in the coming months. Although the timeline for the second phase of the redevelopment remains uncertain, city leaders are optimistic about the potential for future developments, including a new boardwalk and possibly a new stadium.
