Introduction to Emma Williamson’s journey

Emma Williamson’s journey to establish her food truck, Hangry Hazel’s, outside Pittodrie Stadium has been a testament to resilience and determination. After acquiring her food truck in July 2024, Emma envisioned a bustling location that would allow her to serve fans during match days.

However, the path to success was fraught with unexpected challenges that tested her resolve.

Initial setbacks and challenges

Emma’s initial excitement quickly turned into frustration as she navigated the bureaucratic landscape of obtaining a license from Aberdeen City Council.

Despite her proactive approach, which included discussions with local businesses and council officials, she faced significant roadblocks. In October 2024, she learned that her preferred location was unavailable due to strategic planning linked to the council’s beach masterplan. This revelation forced her to consider three alternative sites, prolonging her wait and leaving her in a state of uncertainty.

The turning point

After months of back-and-forth communication, a breakthrough finally occurred during a council meeting on February 19, where councillors granted her a temporary license at her desired location. Emma expressed her relief, stating, “It was great knowing that six months of phone calls, emails, and negotiations had finally got there in the end.” However, her journey was not yet over. Upon receiving permission, she encountered yet another hurdle: concrete boulders blocking the entrance to her site, which delayed her opening.

Establishing Hangry Hazel’s

Despite the obstacles, Emma’s passion for catering, which began in her teenage years, fueled her determination to succeed. She and her business partner named their food truck in honor of Emma’s grandmother, who inspired her entrepreneurial spirit. Now operational, Hangry Hazel’s has received an overwhelmingly positive response from the community, including visits from Aberdeen FC staff and local golfers. Emma reflects on her journey, stating, “We have had such a positive reaction since we arrived. The support has been overwhelming.”

Future prospects and ongoing challenges

While Emma is currently operating under a temporary license, which could be revoked with just 28 days’ notice, she remains optimistic. The council has assured her of open lines of communication, which provides a sense of security amid the uncertainty. Emma’s story serves as an inspiring reminder of the power of perseverance and the importance of community support in overcoming challenges in the business world.
