The Highland Council has officially approved plans for a new primary school in Tornagrain, marking a significant milestone for the growing community. This will be the first primary school in the town, with expectations for it to open its doors by 2027.

The decision comes in response to concerns regarding overcrowding at nearby Croy Primary School, which is currently facing challenges due to an increasing number of students.

Addressing overcrowding concerns

As Tornagrain continues to expand, the need for additional educational facilities has become increasingly urgent.

The new school is set to open in phases, starting with eight classrooms, which will operate at half capacity initially. This gradual approach allows for a smoother transition as the community grows. Currently, Tornagrain is home to over 750 residents, and the local council anticipates that the population will continue to rise, necessitating further educational resources.

Plans for future expansion

The proposed school will eventually accommodate a total of 16 classrooms through two additional phases of construction. A site has already been identified, and council planners are now tasked with developing detailed plans for the school. Critics of the project have raised concerns about the current number of children in Tornagrain, questioning whether the new school is justified. However, council officials have pointed out that there are already 157 primary school pupils in the Croy catchment area, with 43 on a waiting list for transfers.

Safety and accessibility improvements

Currently, children in Tornagrain face a daily commute of 1.5 kilometers along a partially unpaved and unlit path to reach Croy Primary School. This situation has raised safety concerns among parents and community members, especially during the consultation process for the new school. The Highland Council aims to incorporate safer travel arrangements into the new school’s design, aligning with their active travel network initiatives. This focus on safety and accessibility is expected to enhance the overall educational experience for future students.

In summary, the approval of the new primary school in Tornagrain represents a proactive step towards addressing the educational needs of a growing community. With plans for phased construction and a focus on safety, the new facility is poised to provide essential support for local families and contribute to the overall development of the area.
