Elgin’s South Street redevelopment: A new chapter begins
Recent developments in Elgin have unveiled significant changes to the landscape of South Street, particularly with the demolition of several long-standing buildings. The two-storey structure that once housed Junners toy shop at 51 South Street has been completely demolished, marking the end of an era for the local community.

This building had been vacant for nearly 17 years, serving as a reminder of the town’s past.

Demolition of iconic venues

In addition to the Junners building, the remnants of the former Jailhouse nightclub, which had a brief existence of just 18 months, are also being dismantled.

The Newmarket Bar is undergoing similar treatment, further clearing the way for new developments. The Elgin Furniture & Carpet Centre has nearly vanished from the skyline, as demolition crews work diligently to reshape the area.

A vision for the future

The demolition of these five buildings is part of a broader initiative aimed at revitalizing the Elgin town center through a mixed-use redevelopment project. Once the dust settles, the only remnant of the past will be a C-listed archway at the entrance of the former Junners site. This archway will serve as a historical marker amidst the new developments.

Community and economic impact

Photographer Jason Hedges has been documenting this transformation using drone technology, capturing the dramatic changes from above. The regeneration project is a collaborative effort involving Moray Council, development partners Robertson Property Limited (RPL), and UHI Moray. Financial backing from the Moray Growth Deal and an £18.3 million contribution from the Levelling Up Fund underscores the importance of this initiative.

Once the demolition phase concludes, construction will commence on new buildings designed to house a business hub, three retail units, and 38 residential flats spread across five blocks and a central courtyard. Local business leaders are optimistic that these new homes and commercial spaces will enhance foot traffic and stimulate trade, breathing new life into the area.

As Elgin embarks on this transformative journey, the community watches closely, hopeful for a revitalized South Street that honors its history while embracing a vibrant future.
