Incident Overview

A tragic incident unfolded on Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the UK, when a 22-year-old climber lost his life while attempting to scale the challenging terrain. The accident occurred on Saturday evening, around 5 PM, near the notorious Moonlight Gully, prompting immediate rescue efforts from local authorities.

A second climber, a 30-year-old man, was also injured during the fall and required urgent medical attention.

Rescue Operations

Rescue teams, including the Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team, Coastguard helicopters, and police officers, were swiftly deployed to the scene.

The first climber, who managed to descend further down the mountainside, was located and treated for serious injuries before being transported to Raigmore Hospital. Unfortunately, the severe weather conditions and treacherous landscape hampered efforts to reach the second climber, who tragically passed away overnight.

Community Response and Safety Concerns

The Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team reported that this incident marked their fourth callout in just one week, underscoring the increasing risks associated with climbing in adverse weather. A spokesperson for the team expressed their condolences to the family of the deceased climber and thanked the Coastguard Rescue Helicopter crew and Police Scotland for their support during the rescue operations. The police confirmed that searches continued throughout the weekend, but the second climber could not be saved. A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal as part of the investigation into the incident.
