Breaking barriers in crane operation

In a remarkable achievement, 16-year-old Archie Laird from Inverness has become the youngest crane driver apprentice at Stoddart Crane Hire, a prominent hire company located in Muir of Ord. This milestone not only highlights Archie’s ambition but also sets a new standard in the construction industry, showcasing the potential of young talent in skilled trades.

A journey fueled by passion and family legacy

Archie’s journey into the world of crane operation began at an impressively young age. By the time he was just three years old, he had already expressed a desire to become a crane operator.

This passion is deeply rooted in his family, with both his grandfather and uncle having established careers as offshore crane operators. Their influence has undoubtedly played a significant role in shaping Archie’s aspirations and determination to succeed in this field.

Training and future prospects

Currently, Archie is undergoing a rigorous three-month training program at the National Construction College in Norfolk, approximately 500 miles from his home. This intensive training is designed to equip him with the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in crane operation. Upon completion, he will return to Stoddart Crane Hire, where he was honored to be named the first apprentice in late 2024. His commitment to learning and growth is evident as he balances his training with independent living and work commitments back in the Highlands.

Support and recognition from industry leaders

Archie’s dedication has not gone unnoticed. Kerri MacDonald, director of Stoddart Crane Hire, expressed her admiration for his hard work and maturity at such a young age. She emphasized that Archie represents more than just the future of the company; he embodies the values of ambition and resilience that are crucial in the construction industry. The support from his mentors and the company has been instrumental in his journey, providing him with the encouragement needed to thrive.

Inspiring the next generation

Archie’s story serves as an inspiring example for young individuals considering careers in skilled trades. Apprenticeships officer Gillian Mackenzie highlighted the importance of mentorship and hard work in shaping successful careers. Archie’s journey reflects the core values that apprenticeships aim to instill: ambition, resilience, and a commitment to continuous learning. As he prepares to gain hands-on experience in crane operation, the industry watches with anticipation for what lies ahead for this promising young talent.
