Today marked a significant milestone for Aberdeen as the first cruise ship of the 2025 season, the Viking Vela, docked at the port, bringing nearly 1,000 eager tourists to the city. This event not only signifies the start of a bustling cruise season but also highlights the growing popularity of Aberdeen as a travel destination.

With 62 planned cruise visits this year, the city is set to welcome around 40,000 visitors, making it the busiest season yet.

Tourists rave about Aberdeen’s beauty and warmth

As the tourists disembarked, they were greeted with sunny skies and a warm welcome from the locals.

Many expressed their admiration for the city’s stunning architecture and the friendliness of its residents. Sheila Nicholson, an 86-year-old visitor from Los Angeles, shared her awe for the city’s “brilliant” architecture, contrasting it with the palm-lined streets of her hometown. “Everything so far has been absolutely beautiful,” she remarked, highlighting the rich history and vibrant atmosphere of Aberdeen.

Barbara Nelson, her travel companion, added that learning about Scotland’s history has been a highlight of their trip. “Everything in America feels so new compared to the heritage here,” she noted, emphasizing the charm of the city’s historical landmarks.

Aberdeen vs. Edinburgh: A preference for space and tranquility

Among the visitors were James and Florence from Canada, who shared their preference for Aberdeen over the bustling capital, Edinburgh. Florence remarked on the spaciousness of Aberdeen, stating, “It has a lot more space to walk around, and it’s a lot less busy.” This sentiment was echoed by other tourists who appreciated the relaxed atmosphere of the Granite City, which contrasts sharply with the crowded streets of larger cities.

Bob and Susan Bonnie from Austin, Texas, also enjoyed their time in Aberdeen, having explored the city’s beaches and urban landscapes. They viewed the ongoing roadworks on Union Street as a sign of progress, indicating a city that is evolving and improving.

Local hospitality enhances the tourist experience

The warmth of the local people has left a lasting impression on many visitors. Sam and Sue Pohl from Indiana noted the graciousness of the residents, stating, “Everybody has been so welcoming and so gracious with us.” Their experience was enriched by local performances, such as the bagpipes, which added to the cultural experience of their visit.

As the tourists prepared to return to the Viking Vela, they carried with them fond memories of their time in Aberdeen. Dave Harms from Iowa encapsulated the sentiment of many when he said, “Aberdeen is very impressive, combining the old and the new.” His reflections on the city’s accessibility and relaxed vibe compared to busier destinations resonated with fellow travelers, who expressed a desire to return for a longer stay.

With the successful arrival of the Viking Vela, Aberdeen is poised to solidify its reputation as a must-visit destination for cruise travelers, offering a unique blend of history, culture, and hospitality.
