Incident Overview

In a shocking incident that unfolded in Aberdeen, a cyclist named Albert Massie has been sentenced to 14 months in prison following a violent confrontation with a bus driver. The incident occurred on November 8, when Massie collided with a bus on West North Street around AM.

Despite sustaining a head injury, Massie’s reaction was anything but subdued. Instead of accepting assistance, he turned aggressive, threatening the bus driver and displaying erratic behavior.

Escalation of Threats

According to fiscal depute Andrew McMann, Massie’s aggression escalated rapidly.

After the bus driver stopped to check on him, Massie confronted him, stating, “I know who you are, I know your bus route, I know your face, I’m gonna get you.” This alarming behavior took a dangerous turn when he brandished a hammer, further intimidating bystanders. Witnesses reported that he held the hammer up towards a passerby before leaving the scene on his bicycle.

Arrest and Custody Behavior

Later that day, police located Massie on Princess Street, where he was arrested. However, his violent tendencies did not subside. While being placed in a police van, he resisted arrest, kicking out and attempting to spit at officers. Once at the Kittybrewster Custody Suite, Massie’s behavior became increasingly volatile, making threats against the officers and their families. He reportedly stated he would “stick a Rambo knife in your side if I see you in the street” and made further threats involving violence against the families of the officers.

Legal Proceedings and Sentencing

Massie faced multiple charges, including brandishing a hammer and assaulting five police officers. His defense attorney, Mike Munro, highlighted that Massie was dealing with personal issues at the time, including a family tragedy and drug use, but emphasized that this was not an excuse for his behavior. During the court proceedings, Massie expressed remorse for his actions, acknowledging that he was at fault for the collision with the bus.

Previous Offenses and Implications

This incident is not Massie’s first brush with the law. He has a history of threatening behavior, including a previous incident where he threatened to petrol bomb a Tesco car park in Aberdeen. His past offenses have led to extended sentences due to disruptive behavior while incarcerated. The recent sentencing serves as a reminder of the serious consequences of violent actions and the importance of addressing underlying issues that lead to such behavior.
