Understanding the Human Cost of War

Every morning at 9 am, Ukraine pauses for a moment of silence to honor those who have lost their lives or suffered injuries due to the ongoing conflict with Russia. This poignant ritual serves as a reminder of the human cost of war, a reality that became starkly evident during my recent visit to Ukraine.

As I walked through an amputee ward, the sight of freshly stitched stumps left an indelible mark on my heart, prompting deep reflection on the sacrifices made by so many.

The Mission Begins

Our journey commenced last Thursday, following a grueling 36-hour drive from London, covering approximately 2000 kilometers.

The mission was born out of a commitment made during a presentation by the Christian Medical and Dental Association in Parliament. Together with fellow Liberal Democrat MP Danny Chambers, we pledged to raise funds for five ambulances equipped with essential medical supplies to be delivered to Lviv, Ukraine. We were joined by Alex Cole-Hamilton, the leader of the Lib Dems in the Scottish Parliament, and Paul Sweeney, a Labour MSP, along with Simon Brake, the organizer of Mighty Convoy, who has successfully coordinated the delivery of 43 ambulances to date.

The Road to Lviv

Setting off at 7 am on Wednesday, we navigated through the Channel Tunnel, Belgium, Holland, and Germany. The journey was filled with camaraderie as we communicated via walkie-talkies, sharing laughs and stories during our breaks. Despite the long hours on the road, the spirit of our mission kept us energized. As we crossed into Poland, we were struck by the country’s transformation over the past 15 years, a testament to resilience and progress.

Upon reaching the Polish-Ukrainian border, we encountered minimal delays, a fortunate turn of events compared to the tales of bureaucracy we had heard. As we drove through the picturesque countryside towards Lviv, the sight of freshly dug graves and Ukrainian flags in village graveyards served as a sobering reminder of the conflict’s impact on local communities.

Arriving in Lviv

Upon our arrival in Lviv, we were warmly greeted by Uliana, a dedicated charity worker who had been instrumental in organizing our convoy. Central Lviv, a UNESCO World Heritage site, was a beautiful backdrop for our mission. However, our time was limited due to a curfew, prompting us to enjoy a quick meal before settling in for the night.

Witnessing Resilience in Action

The following morning, we visited St. Panteleimon Hospital, where we were impressed by the professionalism and cleanliness of the facility. It was here that I encountered a center for survivors of captivity and torture, a stark reminder of the war’s brutality. Meeting with Mayor Andriy Sadovyi, we learned about the ‘Unbroken’ initiative aimed at supporting the military, which plays a crucial role in the city’s economy, with 20% of its income allocated to the war effort.

Our visit also included a tour of a drone manufacturing facility, shedding light on the innovative ways in which the war is being fought. The day culminated with a heartfelt reception at an army camp, where senior officers expressed their gratitude for Britain’s support, emphasizing its importance in rallying international assistance.

Reflections on Resilience

As we made our way to Warsaw airport, discussions turned to the resilience of the Ukrainian people and the ongoing challenges they face. We reflected on the war crimes committed in Bucha and the plight of the 19,000 Ukrainian children taken by Russian forces. Despite the grim realities, there was a shared sense of pride among us for having contributed, however modestly, to the humanitarian effort. Our journey was not just about delivering ambulances; it was about standing in solidarity with a nation determined to persevere.

In the face of adversity, the spirit of Ukraine shines brightly. Slava Ukraini!
