As the fireworks season peaks, coordinators like Mark Copland navigate health and logistics challenges.

Fireworks season brings excitement and challenges

For fireworks display coordinators, the peak season is akin to the holiday rush for retailers. With numerous displays scheduled across Scotland, the pressure is on to deliver spectacular shows that dazzle audiences. Mark Copland, owner of Fireworx, is currently experiencing this whirlwind of activity, coordinating 40 displays in just nine days. Based in Inverurie, his company is responsible for orchestrating fireworks displays across various regions, including Orkney, Shetland, the Highlands, and Aberdeenshire.

Health scares and dedication

However, the excitement of the season was momentarily overshadowed by a personal health crisis. Mark recently faced a medical emergency due to a burst stomach ulcer, which nearly cost him his life. Despite this alarming situation, he remained committed to his work, instructing his team via group chat while receiving treatment in the hospital. His resilience is a testament to his dedication to the craft and his team, as he stated, “I’m still alive and back to work.” This determination is crucial during such a hectic period.

Logistical challenges of fireworks displays

The logistics involved in executing these displays are nothing short of monumental. Mark explained, “The logistics of getting everybody and everything everywhere it needs to be is crazy.” With trained operators scattered across various locations, including remote islands, the coordination requires meticulous planning and execution. As the team prepares for bonfire night, the pressure intensifies, but Mark remains optimistic about the upcoming holiday season.

Future-proofing the fireworks industry

Looking ahead, Mark is focused on ensuring the sustainability of his business by nurturing the next generation of fireworks operators. He has begun employing local youth, including his son’s friends, who have shown a genuine passion for the industry. “It’s really important that I get people involved who have a passion for this and are willing to put in the time that’s required,” he emphasized. This approach not only strengthens his business but also fosters a sense of community, as local displays bring people together.

Community engagement through fireworks

Fireworks displays are more than just a visual spectacle; they serve as a communal event that unites people. Mark believes that these events are a great way for communities to come together, creating lasting memories and fostering local pride. As Fireworx gears up for a busy week ahead, the team is also reflecting on the successful shows held over the weekend in towns like Elgin, Forres, and Oban.

As the fireworks season continues, the challenges faced by coordinators like Mark Copland highlight the dedication and passion required to bring these stunning displays to life. With a focus on community and the future of the industry, Fireworx is set to light up the skies across Scotland.
