In a heartfelt farewell, Margaret Carmichael, the beloved postmistress of Glenlivet Post Office, is retiring after an impressive 29 years of dedicated service at the branch. Her departure not only signifies the end of her tenure at Glenlivet but also concludes a remarkable 46-year career in the postal service, which has spanned three different locations.
Margaret began her career straight out of school at Bridgend Post Office, where she spent seven formative years.
Following this, she transitioned to Ballindalloch Post Office, where she dedicated the next decade of her life. Her time at Ballindalloch came to a pause when she took a break to care for her elderly parents, showcasing her commitment to family alongside her professional responsibilities.
When the opportunity arose to take over the Bridgend Post Office, Margaret seized the chance to return to her roots in Glenlivet, a place she has called home since 1961.
Reflecting on her time at the Glenlivet Post Office, she expressed, “I enjoyed being there to serve my community. It worked well having Glenlivet as part of my home.”
At the age of 83, Margaret has decided to retire, looking forward to spending more time gardening and reconnecting with her sister. Louise Duff, the Post Office area manager, praised Margaret’s dedication, stating, “I want to sincerely thank Margaret for running Glenlivet Post Office since May 1995. Margaret is very community-minded and cares about her rural community. I wish her a well-earned retirement.”
Throughout her tenure, Margaret has witnessed a gradual decline in the demand for postal services in Glenlivet. The village has seen a shift, with fewer residents living there full-time and an increase in holiday homes, which has impacted the foot traffic at the Post Office.
As Margaret prepares to close this chapter of her life, the Glenlivet Post Office is set to close its doors on Monday, November 11. The nearest alternative branches for residents will be in Ballindalloch and Tomnavoulin, raising concerns about accessibility for the local community. Margaret’s departure marks a significant change for Glenlivet, a community that has relied on her services for nearly three decades.
As the village bids farewell to its long-serving postmistress, the impact of her dedication and service will be felt for years to come. Margaret Carmichael leaves behind a legacy of commitment, community spirit, and a deep connection to the people she has served.
