Reaching the remarkable age of 100 is a rare achievement, and Joe Dow’s family made sure his centenary was a day to remember. Surrounded by approximately 60 friends and family members, the former farmer from Echt enjoyed a delightful lunch on Saturday, marking a significant milestone in his life.
Among those celebrating was Joe’s daughter, Aileen Down, who shared insights into her father’s secrets for a long and healthy life.
According to Aileen, Joe’s longevity can be attributed to a combination of factors. “He always keeps his brain active and stimulated, and takes each day as it comes,” she explained. Joe’s love for a good brandy also seems to play a role in his enjoyment of life. Aileen humorously noted that she rarely needs to buy a newspaper when visiting her dad, as he keeps her updated on all the latest news, reciting everything he reads in the Press & Journal.
Born in the Echt area, Joe spent his entire life there, growing up on a small rented holding of 45 acres with his parents and sister. He began his farming career at a young age, which he pursued until retirement. In April 1955, Joe married his wife Mima, the same year he took over tenancy of 123 acres at Garrick Farm. Together, they raised five children—four sons and one daughter—and Joe established a successful turkey enterprise that eventually evolved into a thriving seed potato business. His reputation as a cattle and sheep seller extended across Scotland, from Wick to Stirling, and he later expanded his farming operations by purchasing additional properties, including South Lasts and Milltimber.
Even in retirement, Joe remains engaged with the world around him. After moving into a retirement home in Carlogie following Mima’s passing a decade ago, he continues to keep himself busy by staying updated on current events and the Aberdeen & Northern Marts, which he now follows online from the comfort of his home. Aileen remarked on her father’s good health for his age and emphasized the importance of family time, stating, “He still loves spending time with his family, as we do with him.” Joe’s enduring friendships, including a special bond with his childhood friend Ethel Taylor, who also celebrated her 100th birthday six months ago, further enrich his life.
