In a significant move for the running community, London Marathon Events (LME) has officially acquired the Loch Ness Marathon, along with the Etape Loch Ness and the Inverness Half Marathon. This acquisition marks a new chapter for these beloved events, which have become integral to the Highland calendar, attracting nearly 20,000 participants this year alone.

Building on a successful legacy

Founded in 2006 by Malcolm and Caroline Sutherland, the Loch Ness Marathon and its associated events have raised over £14.5 million for various charities. The Sutherlands have been instrumental in developing these events, fostering a strong connection with local communities and businesses.

Hugh Brasher, CEO of LME, expressed his commitment to continuing the legacy established by the Sutherlands, stating, “We pledge to continue their work and build on all they have done.”

New energy and expertise

With the acquisition, LME aims to inject new energy into the events while maintaining their unique charm. Malcolm Sutherland believes that the partnership will elevate the events to new heights, saying, “This acquisition is evidence of how incredible the events have become.” He emphasized the importance of the local community, sponsors, and volunteers in creating an atmosphere that welcomes participants from around the globe.

Future prospects for the Loch Ness Marathon

As LME takes the reins, the Sutherlands will continue to play a vital role, leading their existing team and local volunteers. The collaboration promises to enhance the events’ visibility and appeal, potentially positioning them among the best in the world. The synergy between LME and Caledonian Concepts is expected to foster inclusivity in sports and promote the benefits of an active lifestyle.

In recent years, LME has expanded its portfolio by acquiring other prominent events, including the Brighton Marathon and Bath Half Marathon. This strategic growth reflects LME’s commitment to inspiring more people to engage in sports and community activities. As the Loch Ness Marathon embarks on this new journey, the running community eagerly anticipates the innovations and enhancements that will come with it.
