It’s a familiar and dreaded feeling for both male and female at-home colourists alike. However, dyeing your hair doesn’t have to be so difficult and nerve-wracking, you just have to know where to apply the dye, and how to care for your hair afterwards.
1. Wash your hair
The box says not to, but washing your hair before dyeing opens up the pores on your scalp, and on the strands of your hair, allowing for better absorption.
Make sure you blow-dry thoroughly afterwards.
2. Wear appropriate gloves
Wear tight-fitting gloves, as these allow you to manage your hair without the dye affecting
your skin.
3. Have a disposable comb at the ready
You will need a comb to separate your hair into sections. This will help when endeavouring to cover as much of the roots as possible with dye.
4. Start with the roots
Always start dyeing at the roots, using the comb to segment your hair as you dye.
Don’t forget to rub the dye onto the scalp to allow the roots to absorb the colour pigment.
Once you have finished your roots, use the comb again to segment the lengths of your hair and dye them accordingly.
5. Massage
When all of your roots and lengths are covered, massage some excess dye into your hair, this will ensure that your hair is soaked in enough dye.
During the waiting process, massage your hair every 5 minutes or so, as this will keep the dye evenly spread.
6. Wash until the water runs clear
This is fairly self-explanatory but it is important that you rinse away all the excess dye, so make sure the water does run clear before you stop rinsing. Next, condition with a colour-conditioner rather than the conditioner supplied. Leave this in for 10 or so minutes and then rinse, again until the water runs clear.
The result? Beautiful hair, and a stain-free neck, ears and forehead!
If you wish to become lighter, or are naturally dark haired, then always have you hair stripped of it’s colour before you dye, otherwise you will not achieve the desired, new colour.
