Another step towards the approvation of a Covid-19 vaccine
The regulator was formally asked by the UK Government to assess one of the Covid-19 vaccines. That is the Oxford and AstraZeneca jab. The Department of Health said that move marks the first step to get the vaccine approved if it meets the safety, efficacy and quality standards.
It happens a week after the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) was formally asked by the Government to assess the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine.
Matt Hancock, the Health of Secretary, said that the Government are working hard to be in the best possible position to deploy a vaccine as soon as one is approved by the independent regulator the MHRA.
He added: “We have formally asked the regulator to assess the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine, to understand the data and determine whether it meets rigorous safety standards.”
AstraZeneca said it will most likely carry out a further global clinical trial to assess the efficacy of the jab. It befalls after a wonder result discovered 90% protection was achieved when people were given a half dose followed by a full dose.
The acknowledged the finding was as an outcome of a dosing error but said it did not require any new trial to block regulatory approval in countries including the UK.

The Government stated it has secured access to 100 million doses of the Oxford/AstraZeneca jab and 40 million of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine. Mr Hancock also confirmed, if everything approved, a vaccine could be roll out from December.
