Last month we posted the top 2011 crashers from all three GP classes with MotoGP rookie Karel Abraham having the dubious honour of racking up a record 22, followed by Moto2 rider Axel Pons with 20 and Niklas Ajo who binned his 125cc Aprilia 16 times.
Spanish website AS.
com decided to add up all the crash stats for the entire 2011 GP season (practices, qualifying and races) and came up with the record breaking number of 894, which is 18 more than the 876 recorded in 2008.
If anyone really had any doubts, the wildly entertaining and grid packed Moto2 ended up with 47,09% of the total number of crashes with its 421, while MotoGP had ‘only’ 157 and the 125cc class 298.
The cold and wet June Assen weekend had the most crashes with 78, followed by April’s GP at Jerez de la Frontera with 71, the same number as Sepang which strangely enough had some wet patches only during Friday morning practice and was dry for the rest of weekend.
Mugello was the circuit where there were the least number of falls, only 25 and none were MotoGP riders.
The corner that caught out the largest number of riders in 2011 was turn 1 at Estoril with 22 crashes, followed by 17 at the first corner at Sepang while corner 5 at Montmelo saw 16 crashes.
