Fifteen minutes of pure adrenaline and high profile crashes characterized today’s MotoGP QP2 session at Jerez de la Frontera.
Jorge Lorenzo celebrated his 26th birthaday with another pole position – his second of the season and the 53rd of his career.
As usual the reigning World champion was picture perfect, seeminbly never making the slightest mistake and not feeling the pressure that many of the other riders display during the time attack nor suffering any lack of grip, even with the high track temperatures that caught out three riders with all front end crashes.
Lorenzo took the pole position with a best lap of 1.
38.
673, while his closest rivals, except for Marc Marquez who will start in third, all crashed out.
Dani Pedrosa was the second fastest rider, but in his last flying lap suffered a high speed crash binning his Repsol Honda and he was able to walk away, but he helps complete an all Spanish front row.
Cal Cruthlow will open the second row, but the Yamaha Tech3 rider binned his M1 in FP4 and then again in qualifying, scaring everone when he bounced around the asphalt before ending up in the gravel.
He was able to rejoin and go slightly faster even with his second bike.
Valentino Rossi was the other rider who crashed out and he left pieces of his M1 scattered in the gravel.
The Italian is still losing a massive amount of time in the final sector.
Alvaro will be the final rider on the second row.
Nicky Hayden for the first time this season qualified ahead of his team mate Andrea Dovizio, in seventh and ahead of Stefan Bradl who just made it into QP2 with his last flying lap in QP1.
Andrea Dovizioso qualified 9th ahead of an impressive Hector Barbera with his CRT machine, who closed out the top ten.
Andrea Iannone was only 11th, but he was carrying a knee injury picked up during FP4.
Bradley Smith was 12th and he too was able to make into QP2 after coming second in QP1.
