Leon Camier‘s crash in the first free practice at Istanbul Park left him with seven fractures between his foot and ankle.
The Fixi Crescent Suzuki rider had to undergo surgery to repair the extensive damage which was fixed with wires, rods and screws, and unfortunately the injury will keep him out of the next two rounds of the season – Laguna Seca and Magny Cours – an he will try to target a return for Jerez which is the last round of the Superbike championship.
“I am obviously really disappointed with what happened yesterday and frustrated that I now have to miss some races,” said Camier.
“As far as the crash goes, I knew the grip was bad and I was riding accordingly in the conditions.
I went through the first left-hander at the top of the hill and the rear just came round on me off the gas – I was really not expecting it to happen!“It has left me with seven fractures in the foot and I’ve got wires, pins and screws in there.
It was an intricate operation and the surgeon made sure he did the best job he could.
We now have to work out how to get the best rehabilitation for it and I’ll be pushing as hard as I can to come back for Jerez.
”With Camier out of action, team principal Paul Denning could call on his former rider,John Hopkins to replace him.
Hopkins was forced to pull out of the 2012 season and took a one year hiatus to recover from all his injuries, including a much needed left hip surgery.
The American rider has now recovered, just recently said that he was ready to return to racing (he’d like to be Suzuki’s MotoGP test rider) and replacing Camier could be the right occasion to back into the thick of things.
