Syracuse and Ortygia island to host G8 summit in Italy

The new G8 summit will take place in Syracuse or rather on the small Ortygia island where part of the city was built in ancient times.
The island connected to the mainland by three bridges, after a major restoration (4 million euros were splurged on it), is ready to host this important event which will take place from 22 to 24 April.

The island’s main attraction is the Maniace castle built on its southern tip; in origin the place was a fortress named after Giorgio Maniace, a Byzantine general who ordered its construction in 1038; and it’s right here that the eight heads of state will meet and discuss the most important topics.

Apart from the 8G summit, the island deserves a visit.
So if you are planning your summer holidays, write down its name and the monuments worth visiting; from the Church of Santa Maria dei Miracoli and Fonte Aretusa to the Palazzo Bellomo and the famous temple of Athena.
