The mysterious Eremo or hermitage of Poggi Conti in the Maremma region would make for a fascinating day trip.
Located not far from Lake Bolsena and the beautiful town of Pitigliano, the hermitage which was built into tufa rocks and is still decorated with frescoes from 13th century is an enchanting place surrounded by scenic rolling hills and lovely moors.

It can be reached through the famous Sentiero dei Briganti or Brigand Path from which one can also enjoy a breathtaking view of a small waterfall.

According to recent studies the area was inhabited by a group of Benedictine monks who apparently contributed to the design of the frescoes in the hermitage incorporating bucolic scenes.
From the hermitage itself one can also take in the enchanting sight of a lovely little church.
It’s so romantic to imagine the life of that lonely hermit and picture him looking out of the window and then retiring in his small cell for the night.
