When ordering a coffee in Italy, the word “caffè” is enough to order yourself an “espresso” – the famous coffee that has created famous coffee brands such as Lavazza and Illy.
Few know, however, about the little brother of the “espresso”: the “espressino”, particularly unknown in northern Italy where the “marocchino” refers to a short black coffee with milk and chocolate.
The Espressino is a practise that you should get to know if living in southern Italy; served cold, it’s perfect for the hot southern summers.
You can try a homemade coffee “espressino” following the suggestions on the CookAround site, which involve an espresso, a shot of frothy milk or cream and some chocolate.
The cold version involves a style of “affogato” with some icecream.
All of which is not to be confused with Italy’s popular weekly magazine, “Espresso”, around for 50 years.
