White or yellow?
How to choose?
If you are going for a gold engagement ring, the first thing to consider is whether you want it to be white or yellow gold.
Consider what colour jewellery your partner usually wears and pick accordingly. You’ll also want to think about the wedding rings that you will both wear when she says yes!
Next, you have to decide how many carats the gold should be.
There can be quite big jumps in cost with regards to this, and this decision will most likely be dictated by your budget.
Once you’ve thought about that, think about whether you want the band to be plain, or have specific shape or design.
Princess, Heart, Marquise… where do I start?
Types
Whereas before, it was pretty much standard that the shape of a diamond in an engagement ring was square or round, nowadays there are so many choices it can be hard to make up your mind.
Here are a couple of popular choices:
Marquise – elongated shape with two pointed ends
Baguette – long rectangular shape
Setting
You also need to think about the setting of the diamond/s.
You could go for solitaire (a single diamond set in the band), or have a main stone with side stone.
Most rings usually have clear diamonds, and the clearer the diamond the more value it holds.
But you can get coloured diamonds, which might be perfect for your partner.
If you find that your dream ring is starting to be too specific to find one in shops, remember that you can make your own engagement ring.
Design one with a specialist jeweller- at least this way, you can be sure to get exactly what you want, although you may have to invest considerably in it.
Where from?
Final word
You can buy diamond rings from many places, be they online or from a high street retailer.
Wherever you start looking for the right ring, be sure to shop around to find the best prices.
Take your time, and if you can get engagement rings on sale all the better!
