Rupert Young, born only ten minutes after Will, has sadly died at 41 leaving his twin brother devastated. The cause of his death is still not confirmed.
Singer Will Young had previously opened up about his brother’s struggles with mental health issues and about how difficult it is to support a family member who’s struggling with an addiction. Rupert Young was suffering from depression and alcoholism and was only 41 years old when he died leaving his family utterly devastated.
He previously opened up about being behind in the shadow of his famous twin brother. In a 2008 interview with The Telegraph, Rupert said: “I woke up one morning and turned on the TV. There was William on Richard & Judy, giving the most amazing performance of one of his songs.
“I had spent the night before drinking with tramps in a car park and cutting myself. It seemed bizarre to me that two people who are genetically the same could behave in such different ways.
I realised that something had gone very wrong. But I didn’t know what, or why, and nor did anyone else.”
Rupert Young’s struggle was never a secret, both Young brothers had been open about it. About his brother’s mental health issues Will Young had previously opened up and confirmed how hard it was to see him dealing with the struggle, as it was very difficult to support him. In an old interview, he said Rupert actually felt better after the family made the difficult decision to ‘walk away’.
‘It’s very tough having a family member who is an addict. But when you’re dealing with that you eventually have to just stop and look after yourself,’ Will said. ‘Me, my parents, my older sister, everyone. We all just had to walk away. We had to leave him.’ Samaritans is a 24-hour service helpline open every day for emotional support. If you are struggling, call 116 123 or email jo@samaritans.org or visit their website.
