It has been confirmed by his son that ‘I Can See Clearly Now’ singer, Johnny Nash, has died of natural causes at his home in Houston, Texas at the age of 80. His health had been deteriorating for a long time.
Social media has been lit up with a series of tributes. John Cusack tweeted: “Thank you, Mr Nash – for all the love in your music – and for letting us use your great song.
” Holly Robinson Peete, the TV presenter and actress said: “Rest In Peace, Johnny Nash.” Then Musician Rex Chapman added, “2020 is the worst… Rest, Sir.” In the 1950s, Nash began his music career and started co-running a record label in the ’60s. Nash was the man who introduced late reggae legend Bob Marley to American audiences.
In 1972, the pop and reggae singer became mainstream when ‘I Can See Clearly Now’, which is one of the most recognisable songs in recent history, reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart and spent four weeks there.
It peaked at number five in the UK. The track has been covered by a range of musicians over the years, including Ray Charles, Donny Osmond and Jimmy Cliff, whose version featured in the 1993 comedy Cool Runnings. Not only that, but it also made an appearance in Thelma and Louise.
In 1973, Nash opened up about his success in an interview with Zoo World magazine: “I feel that music is universal. Music is for the ears and not the age. Some people say that they hate music. I’ve run into a few, but I’m not sure I believe them.”
Later he topped the charts with Tears On My Pillow in 1975. He reflected on his career in 1998 in an interview with Jamaican publication The Gleaner: “I think I’ve achieved gratification in terms of the people I’ve had the chance to meet. I never won the Grammy, but I don’t put my faith in things of that nature. A lifetime body of work I can be proud of is more important to me. And the special folksy blend to the music I make, that´s what it is all about.”
The legend who had been married three times leaves behind a son Johnny Nash Jr, daughter Monica and wife Carli Nash.
