Entrepreneurs Thomas Lindie and David Taylor launch a unique outdoor store in Aberdeen.

In a bold move that reflects both passion and resilience, Thomas Lindie and David Taylor have launched Out and Back, a new outdoor clothing store in Aberdeen’s historic Green area. This venture comes on the heels of the closure of Hanon, a well-known local shop where both men honed their skills in the retail and marketing sectors. With nearly a decade of experience at Hanon, Lindie saw the closure not as an end, but as a unique opportunity to create something special.

From concept to reality

The idea for Out and Back was born from a simple message. Lindie reached out to Taylor with a proposition to open a store together. “It’s something we are really passionate about,” Taylor recalls. The duo had often discussed the possibility of starting their own clothing business, but it took the closure of Hanon to push them into action. They decided to remain in the Green area, a location they both cherished, despite the ongoing construction that has caused some disruption.

A unique shopping experience

Out and Back aims to offer a curated selection of outdoor apparel and gear that is hard to find elsewhere in Scotland. The store features premium brands that cater to outdoor enthusiasts, whether they are into running, hiking, or cycling. Taylor emphasizes their commitment to providing products that resonate with their customers’ passions. “We really like the outdoors, and what makes this store special is our genuine passion and care for product,” he explains.

Building a community hub

More than just a retail space, Lindie and Taylor envision Out and Back as a community hub where like-minded individuals can gather. They want to create an environment that encourages conversation and connection among outdoor enthusiasts. “We are building something that people would want to come to – a destination with a wealth of really good and hard-to-find products,” Lindie states. Their vision extends beyond mere commerce; they aim to foster a sense of community in the heart of the Green.

Looking to the future

Despite the challenges posed by ongoing construction in the area, both entrepreneurs remain optimistic about the future. They believe that the new food and drink market being developed nearby will enhance the vibrancy of the Green, attracting more visitors and boosting local businesses. “We appreciate there is lots of construction going on outside, but we are pretty confident that the market will be a good thing when it’s completed,” Lindie asserts. Their determination to succeed in this evolving landscape reflects their commitment to the community and their shared love for the outdoors.
