A recent resurfacing project along Rosemount Place in Aberdeen has raised significant concerns among local business owners. The Aberdeen City Council initiated the roadworks on Sunday, with plans to continue until November 10. This closure, particularly between South Mount Street and Eden Place, has created a challenging environment for businesses that rely heavily on foot traffic.

Declining foot traffic impacts local businesses

Leeanne Coutts, owner of The Richmond St Deli, reported a drastic drop in customers since the roadworks began.

“When we opened yesterday, it was dead when there is usually steady business,” she stated. Many of her customers are drivers who typically park briefly to grab a meal. The unexpected nature of the roadworks caught her off guard, as she only learned about them through a local business WhatsApp group the night before they started.

To mitigate the impact, Coutts has taken to social media to inform her customers about alternative routes.

However, she fears that if the situation persists for the next two weeks, it could be financially devastating for her business. “We do expect it to be busier than it is at this time due to the holidays ending, but there’s definitely been a drop in footfall these past few days,” she added.

Challenges for charity shops and pharmacies

Other local businesses, such as the Archway Charity Shop, are also feeling the strain. Co-manager Jan Bremner expressed frustration at not being informed about the roadworks in advance. The shop has seen a decline in donations as people struggle to park nearby. “It’s become very inconvenient for people who want to donate,” she lamented. The shop’s regular delivery service has also been disrupted, further complicating operations.

Similarly, Rosemount Pharmacy has reported a noticeable decline in customers, particularly among older individuals who typically rely on taxis. Pharmacist Helen Goldie noted, “There has definitely been a drop in customers since the roadworks began. We would usually get a lot of footfall after school and work, but so far it’s been empty.” This decline has prompted the pharmacy to consider increasing delivery services, although their delivery driver is also facing challenges due to the road closures.

Community support amidst adversity

Despite the hardships, some business owners have expressed appreciation for the necessary improvements being made to the road surface. While the current situation is challenging, they remain hopeful that the long-term benefits will outweigh the short-term inconveniences. As the resurfacing project progresses, local businesses are calling for better communication from the council to ensure they are informed about such disruptions in the future.
