There is a new rule now in force in order to deal with Covid in England- a fine of £10,000 for refusing to self-isolate. It is yet another measure with almost 18 million people are under extra restrictions across parts of the UK.
£10,000 Covid rule breaking fine enforced in England
It will be a legal requirement for people in England to self-isolate from this week if they test positive for Covid or are contacted by the test and trace service.
The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) said that if they do not comply, they risk being hit with new fines starting at £1,000 and increasing up to £10,000 for serial offenders or serious infringements. People with Covid will also be fined if they lie about their close contacts to the test and trace service.
DHSC added that police will enforce this latest rule in the areas with the largest umbers of positive Covid cases and in the most vulnerable groups based on “local intelligence” (tip-offs from third parties). The most serious cases of non-compliance will be investigated and prosecuted. Another rule introduced means that people on low incomes who cannot work from home will be eligible for a new £500 test and trace support payment. Wedding ceremonies in England are now restricted to 15 people as well.
Neath Port Talbot, Torfaen and the Vale of Glamorgan have also been added to the growing list of local lockdowns. Other Welsh lockdowns include Cardiff, Swansea, Llanelli, Blaenau Gwent, Bridgend, Caerphilly, Merthyr Tydfil, Newport, and Rhondda Cynon Taf. In England, the latest casualties are Wigan, Stockport, Blackpool and Leeds while stricter rules are already in force across most of north-west England, West Yorkshire, the North East and the Midlands. Parts of west Scotland are also in lockdown too.
The government released Sunday’s statistics showing 5,693 new lab-confirmed cases of Covidin the UK and 17 Covid related deaths.
