After months of meditations, the decision is official: Manchester’s Christmas markets have been cancelled. Despite the Covid case surge in the North, the city’s council stubbornly tried to avoid this scenario, but eventually the verdict was inevitable.
Manchester’s Christmas lights switch-on event, New Year’s Eve fireworks and Bonfire Night celebrations have been also called off.
Pat Karney, Manchester’s Christmas spokeperson, proposed to bypass the public health standard by setting up smaller markets, but this solution would not have worked as well.
“We’ve cancelled everything. It’s not met our commercial and public health tests. The health of all of us, we could not take any risk with that”.
However, the city will still be lit up with Christmas lights and seasonal lights installation, inclusive of the giant glowing Santa at Piccadilly Gardens. “It’s going to be a very unusual Christmas in Manchester but what we’re going to do is put up additional lighting through the city centre and more static lighting attractions.
I don’t want Manchester to have a North Korean Christmas“.
Nonetheless, Karney hopes that people will the City centre, since Christmastime is traditionally a period of prosperity for the mancunian retailers. Recently put under new restrictions, Liverpool has not gone under any official decision yet. The city council is trying to evaluate the feasibility of a Chistmas Market on St George’s Hall plateau. In the meanwhile, the River of Light event has been cancelled
