Less than 24 hours after the Prime Minister announced that the country would enter the second lockdown due to the number of infection in Britain getting higher, several Britons went crazy.
Despite a reasonable number of shops will remain open during the lockdown, panic buyers stripped the shelves of Tesco in Riverhead. Most of the products grabbed were baby milk and toilet rolls. Not only that, the Aisher Way Superstore also became the shopping frenzy.
Shopper Gary Raine described the actions as “disgusting” and said he had been astounded outright. It seemed like people have gone crazy.
The shelves were also empty of kitchen rolls and pasta. The scenes were similar of the ones back in March, just before the first national lockdown.
Mr Raine also added, “There are young parents out there who need baby milk for newborn babies and they are finding the shelves raided.
They have heard the lockdown on TV and they have literally gone out and stripped the shelves. It is just ludicrous.”
Other shoppers expessed on social media their dismay. Moreover, Tesco shop assistant Kathy Barton described how some staff had been abused by angry customers intent on stocking up.
A Tesco spokesman said the company had a three-item limit on a number of items including pasta, flour, toilet roll, and baby-wipes. She added, “We have good availability in stores and online, with plenty of stock to go around, and we would encourage our customers to shop as normal.”
