People will be able to create their personal order on Aldi's online platform and then pick up it.

Discount supermarket Aldi has extended its click and collect trial as it faces growing competition from rivals.

Christmas shopping: how Coronavirus changed it

Going to the supermarket during the Christmas period has always been a real challenge. People often set out in search of the best and most beautiful gifts. So, the shop was very busy.

But this year the Coronavirus epidemic changed the situation. Supermarkets will be forced to limit the number of people allowed to stay in shops at once.

In this emergency situation, more and more people have flocked to online shopping to buy gifts but also food. So, often the various online platforms have overcrowded, causing quite a few problems.

Aldi extends its click and collect: a help for families

But this year Aldi has announced it will extend its “click and collect” trial scheme over the winter period to 200 stores across the country to help families do all their Christmas food shopping, without having to go inside the store.

Aldi first launched its click and collect service to customers at a single store in the Midlands in September. Shoppers can choose from a full range of grocery items online, then collect them in their cars “contact-free” at their local stores.

Giles Hurley, boss of Aldi UK and Ireland, expressed himself in this regard saying: “We know that more and more people want to buy high-quality food at unbeatable Aldi prices, particularly at the moment, and this trial has been hugely popular so far”. He also added: “By extending it to hundreds of new stores, we’re making Aldi accessible to thousands of shoppers who might never have visited one of our stores before.”

The German discounter has expanded rapidly over the past decade. However, it has experienced a rapid growth since March as online grocery shopping has doubled its share of the UK market to around 14%. Customers who want to use click and collect should visit Aldi’s website to book the collection in selected stores. Orders are packed by staff in store, then delivered to customers in dedicated parking bays when they arrive.
