Queues at Trafford Centre
At the Trafford Centre, crowds of people flocked to the second day of post-Christmas sales despite the increase of infections. The Centre had to warn them it was full.
The city of Manchester is currently still in high risk Tier 3. Despite this, many people have rushed to go to the Tafford Centre in order to take advantage of the post Christmas sales.
Faced with the irresponsibility of citizens, the Trafford Centre opted for some measures. Infact, it was forced to reiterate “masks must be worn”, following reports of people flouting coronavirus restrictions.
Moreover, on Sunday afternoon, drivers were greeted with electronic boards saying “centre full” as they arrived.
The photos showed bargain hunters forced to wait in lines snaking out of the center’s open entrances. Moreover, also the traffic around the centre, which was open until 6pm, was also said to be “slow” with several of its car parks full.
On the other hand, the centre kept its social media accounts up to date.
On Sunday, for example, the centre’s social media accounts posted a warning shortly before 1.30pm saying: “We are currently at capacity, meaning visitors will be asked to queue to get into the centre. Please be kind to our teams who are working hard to get everyone in quickly and safely.”
The Trafford Centre’s official account also posted on Twitter a statement saying: “If you are visiting us today, please when queueing to get into the centre keep your social distance. Thank you for your patience and for doing your part to help keep all our visitors and staff safe.”
In areas currently under tier 4 restrictions, all non-essential shops have to close. However, in those areas currently in tier 3, including Greater Manchester, retail stores are allowed to remain open, providing they have social distancing and hygiene measures in place.
