Numbers reveal that police forces in England and Wales have reported the highest number of rapes and the second-highest number of sexual offences. Those are in 12 months.
Based on the Office for National Statistics (ONS), there were 61,158 rapes listed in the year to June. They involved 17,285 between April and June. It’s the highest quarterly figure.
In the same three-month period, there were 164,763 sexual offences inscribed in the year to June. It also means the highest quarterly figure by 48,553.
Nick Stripe, head of crime statistics at the ONS, stated the police figures show a “great raise in the recording of rape and sexual offences during the latest April to June 2021 quarter”, but advised warning when describing the data.
He also added that the increase could be due to an addition in victim reporting as lockdowns released, an addition in the number of victims, or a raise in victims’ eagerness to state incidents. It might be potentially as a result of high-profile events and campaigns in recent times.”
