Bus drivers in the Highlands face strike action over pay dispute
In a significant escalation of tensions, around 200 bus drivers from Stagecoach in the Scottish Highlands and Islands have voted to strike over a contentious pay dispute. The decision, backed by Unite the Union, comes as workers express dissatisfaction with a proposed pay increase of only 4%, which they deem unacceptable given the rising cost of living.
The potential strike action could severely disrupt bus services across northern Scotland, particularly affecting rural areas such as Skye and Orkney, as well as regions north and west of Inverness. This disruption is particularly concerning for commuters who have already faced numerous cancellations in recent weeks. Last month alone, over 200 bus services in Inverness were canceled due to driver shortages attributed to “sickness” and “availability” issues.
Sharon Graham, the general secretary of Unite, emphasized the importance of fair compensation for the drivers, stating, “Unite’s Stagecoach bus drivers who provide a vital service across the Scottish Highlands and Islands deserve an improved pay offer.” She criticized the company for prioritizing profit over the welfare of its employees, asserting that the current offer fails to meet the needs of the workforce.
Marc Jackson, an industrial officer with Unite, has urged Stagecoach to present a more reasonable pay offer to avert the impending strike. He remarked, “This dispute could be resolved by a fair and reasonable pay offer to our members.” The union is advocating for better pay and working conditions, emphasizing that the ongoing negotiations are critical not only for the drivers but also for the commuting public who rely on these essential services.
Stagecoach Highlands has acknowledged the vote for industrial action and stated that they are committed to minimizing disruption. A spokesperson for the company reassured passengers that efforts are underway to reach a fair agreement with union representatives. “We would like to reassure our passengers that we are doing everything we can to minimize any potential disruption to services,” they stated.
As the situation develops, both drivers and commuters are left in a state of uncertainty, hoping for a swift resolution to the pay dispute that could significantly impact public transport in the region.
