After more than 170 years, whisky production has made a triumphant return to the Moray community of The Cabrach, often referred to as the “birthplace” of malt whisky. The Cabrach Distillery, a community-led initiative, recently celebrated its first distillation, marking a significant milestone in the region’s rich whisky heritage.

A community-led initiative

The Cabrach Distillery is not just another whisky producer; it is a social enterprise and the first Community Interest Company of its kind in the area. This project is spearheaded by The Cabrach Trust, which aims to revitalize the local community through economic development and cultural preservation.

The distillery’s first distillation took place at Inverharroch Farm, within beautifully restored 19th-century stone buildings, and was attended by over 100 guests who witnessed this historic moment.

Economic revitalization through whisky

Securing £140,000 in funding earlier this year, The Cabrach Distillery aims to become the “economic lungs” of the community. Jonathan Christie, the chief executive of The Cabrach Trust, emphasized the importance of this project in attracting visitors to the area, drawn by its incredible history and stunning landscapes. The distillery is set to include a dedicated heritage center and a bistro, further enhancing its role as a community hub.

Commitment to quality and sustainability

The Cabrach Distillery is committed to producing a handcrafted single malt Scotch whisky that meets the highest social and environmental standards. The distillation process will be meticulous, with the spirit maturing in fine casks over time. All profits generated will be reinvested into the community, supporting ongoing regeneration efforts. Grant Gordon OBE, the founder and chair of The Cabrach Trust, expressed immense pride in the distillery’s achievements, highlighting its significance in celebrating the cultural identity of The Cabrach.

As the first spirit flowed through the stillhouse, Deputy First Minister Kate Forbes remarked on the distillery’s unique contribution to Scotland’s vibrant food and drink sector. The Cabrach Distillery is poised to become a leading example of community-led rural regeneration, showcasing the potential of local resources and talent.

With its ambitious vision and community support, The Cabrach Distillery is not just reviving a historic craft; it is breathing new life into a community that has faced decades of decline. As it embarks on this exciting journey, the distillery promises to create a legacy that honors its past while forging a prosperous future.
