According to data obtained through a Freedom of Information request, between October 14, 2023, and October 14, 2024, approximately 5.68% of ScotRail journeys from Aberdeen to Inverness were delayed by at least 10 minutes. In contrast, 4.48% of trains traveling in the opposite direction faced similar delays.

The statistics reveal that 45 journeys from Aberdeen to Inverness and 46 from Inverness to Aberdeen were delayed by at least 30 minutes. Furthermore, more than 100 trains connecting these two cities were either fully or partially cancelled between October 17, 2023, and October 1, 2024. Specifically, the Aberdeen to Inverness route saw 34 full cancellations and 17 partial cancellations, while the reverse route experienced 40 full cancellations and 16 partial cancellations.

Notably, the cancellation rate for the Inverness to Aberdeen route accounted for 1.24% of services, while 1.15% of services from Aberdeen to Inverness were fully cancelled.

Despite these challenges, the performance metrics for the Aberdeen to Inverness route are significantly better than the national average. A report from the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) indicated that the national cancellation rate between April 2023 and March 2024 was 2.3%. ScotRail officials have expressed optimism regarding the improvements in service reliability, with Mark Ilderton, the service delivery director, stating that over 98% of services operated without cancellation and more than 90% ran without significant delays. This progress reflects the commitment of ScotRail to enhance the travel experience for its customers.
