Brackla Farm’s remarkable achievement

Brackla Farm, located near Nairn, has been awarded the prestigious Royal Northern Agricultural Society (RNAS) good practice award for this year. Innovative farming practices

Managed by A & A Mackay, Brackla Farm spans 1,200 acres, predominantly dedicated to arable farming. The farm also includes a small area of permanent grass, specifically 60 acres allocated for a free-range poultry operation housing 48,000 hens. This initiative not only supports animal welfare but also contributes significantly to the local economy, with approximately 120,000 eggs delivered weekly to over 100 wholesale customers.

Furthermore, the farm maintains a herd of 60-100 Aberdeen-Angus cattle, ensuring a diverse agricultural output.

A celebration of agricultural excellence

The RNAS annual awards ceremony took place at the Leonardo Hotel, near Aberdeen International Airport, where the 2024 winner was announced during a special luncheon. The event celebrated not only Brackla Farm’s achievement but also honored other distinguished individuals in the agricultural sector. Among the recipients were George Duncan, who received the “local” accolade, and Albert Fyfe, recognized as an “unsung hero.” Additionally, awards were presented to Pete Watson and Nicola Wordie for their contributions to public engagement and youth involvement in agriculture, respectively.

Recognizing contributions to the industry

In a heartwarming moment, retired agricultural journalist Eddie Gillanders and his wife, Marion, were honored for their lifelong contributions to the farming community. This recognition came shortly after Eddie received another award at the Scottish Agriculture Awards, underscoring the impact of their work in promoting and supporting the agricultural sector. The RNAS also emphasizes the importance of nurturing emerging talent, with awards given to students like Lucy Gordon and Bethany Cameron, who represent the future of farming.

Conclusion

Brackla Farm’s recognition at the RNAS awards serves as a testament to the hard work and dedication of those in the agricultural industry. As the sector continues to evolve, such accolades inspire others to adopt sustainable practices and strive for excellence in their operations.
